Marilyn Monroe and the Moon of Barada

Marilyn Monroe singing "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a classic moment in movie history.  Did you know that the pear-shaped canary diamond she wore around her neck in promotional photos and during the movie has a long and interesting history behind it?
The diamond, the Moon of Barada, was discovered in Barada (now Vadodara), India.  The rough diamond weighed 25.95 carats.  It was later cut in a pear shape and now weighs 24.04 carats.  The Moon of Barada was originally owned by the royal Gaekwad family, the Maharajas of Barada.  It was later sent by the Gaekwad family to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the only female monarch of the Habsburg dynasty.  The diamond was later returned to the Gaekwad family and then sold to an unknown buyer in 1860.
The diamond resurfaced in the 1940's and was purchased by Meyer Rosenbaum, the president of the Meyer Jewelry Company.  It was Rosenbaum who gave the necklace to Marilyn Monroe, who wore it for promotional stills and in the shooting of the film.  The diamond is owned by Christies auction house now.
The diamond's long history is proof of the words Marilyn sang:  "Men grow cold as girls grow cold, and we all lose our charms in the end...but square-cut or pear-shaped, these rocks don't lose their shape.  Diamonds are a girl's best friend."  Here's the clip from the movie:
